St Joseph’s RC Primary School, Blaydon – 2024

​​Project awarded under Able’s four-year building works framework with the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust. The challenge for this project was to complete extensive works in three separate areas of the school in six weeks, and this was successfully achieved with Able’s directly employed local workforce working hand-in -hand with the supply chain. At the same time Able also completed a further seven projects under the framework.

Works involved the conversion of two existing classrooms and cloak room area into a nursery classroom, reception classroom, nursery toilets, changing room and hygiene room. The existing staffroom, staff tea point and head teachers’ office were reconfigured to form a new large classroom. Also an existing un-used classroom was reconfigured to form a new office, circulation corridor and cloakroom.

Works included the demolition of internal partitions with new structural support installed to enable changes to the building layout. New fire stopping and compartment walls were installed to maintain existing fire compartmentation strategy.

New exterior doors were fitted the nursery and reception classrooms. New nursery toilet cubicles with matching vanity units and ducting panels were fitted to the new nursery toilets room. The nursery and reception classrooms were fitted with a new folding partition wall to the newly formed opening. General refurbishment work of the existing spaces including replacing the ceiling, wall and floor finishes together with installation of new doors and trim joinery.

The project also included the design and installation of new Electrical and Mechanical services to facilitate use of the new rooms and changed layouts. All new systems were integrated into the existing fire detection, intruder detection and network infrastructure on site.

Externally, new underground drainage was installed to serve the new nursery toilets, hygiene room and new change room. This included the breakout of the existing floor slab to install new drainage runs and internal manholes.
